How Honey Bee Came to Be

Our family is expecting a new baby this January! Our daughter with her boyfriend of a few years are expecting their first child and they are celebrating every moment of this miracle! Having been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at age 19, our daughter receives infusions of medication every 28 days to keep her disease under control. During Covid-19, she became concerned when she was late because she was taking birth control. After taking a pregnancy test and being positive, our daughter immediately stopped taking all her medications. This caused a few months of great concern and difficulty but the couple intend to enjoy every minute of their pregnancy! Since my daughter loves to garden and save the bees, the theme was simple to choose! What Will Our Honey Bee! Gender Reveal Party

How I found out the baby’s sex

Having had many tests to ensure the safety of this baby, the Doctor knew the baby’s sex. My daughter requested the information be put in an envelope at the office where I could show my ID and pick it up. The couple wanted to celebrate the news with loved ones and with some sort of excitement like an explosion. In planning any party it is important to provide the desired elements!

Now that you know the background of how this party came to be, here is the list of what is needed to throw the Gender Reveal Party: What Will Our Honey Bee!

Skill level: Easy and Fun

Items Needed

    • choose invitation:     I chose  these invitation because the bees weren’t too real or too cartoon like. Bee Invitation    Also this Etsy retailer made it so easy to modify this Shower invitation to a Gender Reveal and they included other coordinating items.
    • pick a Thank You Card I chose the coordinating Bee card  Thank You Card
    • find a Prediction Card, again I went with the coordinating card. This is a fun idea to put in the baby book or to tie together and make it a book for the family to read and remember.
    • plan a game or something to do, I planned to have guests put their fingerprint on a love tree to hang in the baby’s room . Honey Bee Gender Reveal Tree  I also had guest pick a pink or blue necklace , purchased from Oriental Trading Company, to wear during the party.

Steps To throw the Gender Reveal Party “What Will Our Honey Bee?”

    2 months before:

    1. Pick a date

Choose the date of the party. Take into consideration the time of year and schedules. The baby coming in January and our parents wanting to know right away, we scheduled accordingly in July. This being summertime we chose a Sunday afternoon between 3-5p. This time allowed people to wind down after work on Friday or have a date night. Saturday could be filled with family time, sports or outside fun. Then friends and family could attend church, have lunch and come to our party. This time had guests leaving early enough for dinner and for Monday’s preparation.

    2. Make a guest list.

We listed those who were closest to the couple. Once this list was created, we examined who would likely attend and who was too far away to make the party. After the number was totaled, we examined the amount of guests. Making sure no one important was left out, even on the father’s side which I was not familiar with, was very important. This was the time to examine if the list had too many guests, in this case we would have deleted some numbers. Some parties are intended for certain guests and others are more of an open house. Consider who the party is for and what it is about when creating the guest list. Also begin to collect addresses needed at this time. Keep them all in one place for easy addressing.

    3. Plan the place.

Choosing the venue early ensures the availability. If the party is at a home it is not so important. When planning our party, we considered some local places because of the number of guests along with the ease of having a party in a venue. Covid-19 added another aspect to the planning. It became obvious that having the party at our home would be the best place.

    Gender Reveal Welcome Table

    4. Pick a theme

You are here so What Will Our Honey Bee? is a theme of interest. Choosing your theme this early allows for the invitations to be purchased and if needed, shipped. This is a fun part of party planning! Again consider why you are having the party and for whom.

    5. Purchase invitations

There are many invitation ideas available. We fell in love with our invitation and it was an instant download. This made it easy to modify and print. This design comes with coordinated Thank you and baby prediction cards along with other options we did not use. Our daughter didn’t want a bee that looked too real because that isn’t baby enough. She also didn’t want a cartoon bee. We loved the double sided cards which added that extra touch. I am all about adding the extra touch!

Some invitations can be ordered, printed and then mailed to you, addressed ready to send. Others can be made on a Cricut machine, written in pen and cut out! Enjoy the process!

    6. Plan the menu

Since our party was after lunch yet before dinner, our menu was small appetizers, fruit then a dessert. If the party is during a meal hour then plan to provide a meal for your guests. We had to consider Covid-19 as well. The food would be served to each person to avoid contamination and the spread of the virus. Serve food on toothpicks or in individual containers. Buffets are a great way to present and serve food but they are not recommended with Covid-19 present. If your party is at a venue that serves food, consider the ease of your guest eating the food. It is all about what you want your party to be! Incorporate bibs or warm wash cloths into the plan if you desire a messy food!

    Added Fun

I wrote all the words I could imagine to go with the What Will our Honey Bee theme. From that list I named the menu items with words that made cute Food Label cards. I even chose the fruit to go with the yellow and black colors.

    7. Send Invitations

Send out invitations and for an extra touch, check for stamps which go along with the theme. There may be a bee stamp for this theme, or for a bridal/ baby shower, there may be a heart stamp. Include the baby prediction card with a self addressed stamped envelope for those who are unable to attend.

    8.Write the shopping list

Making your shopping list this early gives you time to watch for sales of the items on the list. Once the shopping list is made, break the list down into lists for each store. I had a list for the grocery store, Costco/Sam’s Club, Party City, Hobby Lobby and a food distribution store.

    9.Begin to purchase decorations

Watch the sales and coupons for area stores. Hobby Lobby has great sales on decor items and ribbon. Buying early gives you time to take advantage of sales and wait a week if needed for a better price! Also this gives time to have online items shipped.

    10. Order the cookies or cake

If you plan to have an ordered dessert, now is the time to order it. Provide pictures of your desired look if you have them.

    11. Begin to purchase the nonperishable foods and drinks.

I found deals on the ingredients for the cheesecake and honeycomb crunch so I bought them. Also the lemonade went on sale so I was able to grab that as well.

    12. Keep all the supplies in one place

I placed all the party items in one place. I kept each category in separate bags or boxes. I put the decor items in one box, ingredients in another. The tableware and silverware were in a bag. This way when it came time to make something I knew where all the items were quickly.

    13. Rent extra tables or chairs

This is the time to rent extra tables or chairs if needed. There are so many great items available to rent, including tablecloths, chair covers, plants, yard games and even slushie machines!

gender reveal party What will our honey bee garden flag

    14. Call those guests who haven’t responded to the RSVP yet.

Times get busy and sometimes we forget. Be understanding if your guests have missed letting you know or are unable to attend.

    15. Begin to assemble the party favors and decorations.

This is such a fun time. Put on good music or a favorite movie while you create. Invite friends over to help. Make a memory!

    16. Make the name tags

When a party has people attending who don’t naturally know each other then provide a name tag. The name is right there and avoids any awkward feelings guests might have. I don’t mind talking to strangers, but not everyone is like me. We want our guests to be as comfortable as possible and this small tag can make a big difference. Someone shy may not feel comfortable speaking to a stranger but can read the name tag to put a face to name.  It can be a conversation starter because people might recognize a name from stories. I like to coordinate the name tag to the party theme and have them written out, giving that little extra touch. This is also a great way to know if all those expected to attend are there before the big gender reveal! Or cake cutting, games or gift opening!

    1-3 days before:

    17. Finish buying the food and drinks

I was able to buy my food all a few days ahead of the party because it would still be fresh and delicious. Time your purchase to the type of food you are providing. Don’t let fruit get too ripe or bread get stale.

    18. Finish decorations and decorate where you can

Finish whatever decorations are left to be completed. Put up decorations where you are able. Our party was outside so we were not able to put things up the day before as there was a rain threat. Complete what you can, before the day of the party.

    19. Charge the camera batteries

Charge the batteries to the camera and video camera so they are ready to go. I wanted multiple cameras capturing our gender reveal, one up above and one capturing the faces of the couple. Arrange people to help with recording the memory now so they are prepared.

    The day of party:

    20. Pick up any decorations and dessert

This is the time to pick up the cookies or cake, flowers and rented items.

    21. Prep the food

Prepare the food that you are able. Prep the food that you can so it can be assembled easily the day of the party.

    22. Set up tables

If you are able, set up the tables with the decor. Since our party was outside I was not able to put tables up outdoors so I set them up in the garage. I put the tablecloths and runners on them along with the centerpieces. If needed, use tablecloth clips to keep the tablecloth from blowing off tables during the party or in a pinch tape the tablecloth to the underside of the table. We sprinkled the confetti where it went because it was protected inside the garage.

    The day of party:

    23. Buy Ice!

Remember to buy ice! What a bummer if someone has to leave the party because the icemaker is empty or you run out. Drinks that are to be served cold are not the same when they are warm. Be prepared.

    24. Finish setting up

Get the tables where they need to be. Turn on the desired music. Mark the location of the party with signage so guests know where to go. Put the drinks on ice and start the coffee brewing.

    25. Finish food preparations and presentation.

Get the food out and ready before the guests arrive. Put food on platters or serving trays. Light the warmers if needed. Make sure there are serving utensils available. Get the drinks on ice in a cooler or have an ice bucket with ice with tongs to fill glasses.

    26. Get beautiful

Get dressed for the party. Getting everything ready might work you into a sweat so get dressed in party attire after the hard work. Finish your hair style and make up so it is beautiful as you greet your guests.

    27. Grab some pictures

As everything is set up and in place, stand back and admire your work. Take pictures of each thing before anyone touches it. Try to capture the whole look of the party. These pictures can go in the baby book, wedding album, or a photo album.

    28. Greet the guests and have a great time!

Make your own garden flag! Celebrate the United States of America with a handmade patriotic, red white and blue Freedom Eagle on your handmade garden flag! What a great way to show our patriotic colors on Memorial Day or July 4th. In addition, this garden flag will be unique! The neighbors won’t have it unless you make it for them!

Honestly garden flags can look and seem complicated to make. With a little inspiration and simple instruction, a garden flag is possible for anyone to make. Here are the step by step instructions along with pictures of how to make your own Freedom Eagle Garden Flag.

    Skill level: intermediate

    Freedom Eagle Flag Materials

    Material list

      • Nylon Material

Purchase White nylon material, enough for 2 -12 x 15 squares.

Purchase Red and Blue nylon material, enough for 1-12 x 15 square of each color

      • Embroidery Sewing Machine
      • Medium Weight Cut Away Stabilizer

      • Scissors

I used one pair to cut the nylon and a                   small pair to cut my jump stitches

      • Pins

To make the Freedom Eagle Garden Flag follow these simple steps.

      1. Purchase the Freedom Eagle design

Click here to purchase Freedom Eagle embroidery design.

      2. Download Freedom Eagle embroidery design to embroidery sewing machine

Follow your machines instructions to download design pattern to embroidery sewing machine.

The Freedom eagle Machine embroidery Pattern

      3. Hoop 1- 12×15 square Nylon material

I used a 200×260 hoop with medium weight cut away stabilizer on the back.

      Machine Embroidery Hoop

      4. Stitch out the Freedom Eagle embroidery pattern

Trim jump stitches. Trim the cut away stabilizer to the edge of the white square. This will ensure the design won’t show through the other side of flag.

      5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 so you have a front and back of the flag.

      Freedom Eagle Embroidery Stitching

      6. Cut the red and blue nylon streamers.

I have a patterns for the streamers in my free library for download and print. There is also a pattern to use and cut on a Cricut.

Red Streamer for Freedom Eagle Flag Instructions
Blue Streamers for Freedom Eagle Flag Instructions

      7. Sew the edges of the white flag.

To keep the edges of the nylon from fraying, sew (or hem) the edges of the 12 x 15 squares. I used a 1/4 inch hem around the entire square.

      Sew a Quarter Inch Hem

      8. Attach the streamers to the flag.

Lay the streamers on top of the stitched white flag from top to bottom. Make sure the tsreamers are on top of the stitching and not the stabilizer. Pin the bottom of the streamers to the bottom of the white nylon. Stitch a baste stitch across the bottom of white nylon and streamers to hold the streamers in place. Leave the streamers laying on top of stitching.

      9. Sew the front and back of Freedom Eagle Flag together

Lay the stitched white nylon squares together, right sides, or stitched sides together. The streamers should lay inside the right sides of the white stitched nylon. Make sure the ends or edges of the streamers are not near the edges of the white nylon. You do not want to sew them into the edge of the flag.

Begin to sew 2 inches from top of one of the sides of the white nylon. Sew down one side, across the bottom, and up the othere side, stopping 2 inches from top. See diagram.

At this point, turn the flag right side out. With the stitching on the outside, smooth out the flag. A nice finish to the flag is to top stitch all around the side and bottom edges. This is not required but does finish the flag nicely.

Now sew straight across the top of flag, 2 inches down from top. Sew again straight across at the top of the flag. This just formed the pocket to hang the flag from.

Hang on your garden flag pole and enjoy! Now you know how to make the Freedom Eagle Garden flag, you can let your creativity go wild! Create a flag for every holiday!

10 Steps for Crafting Stress Free

10 steps for crafting stress free ensures the maximum benefits in the creative process. People who create have known how good it feels to make something. Creating feeds our souls, makes us feel better.

CNN stated on January 5, 2015 that creating is beneficial to us in a number of important ways. The article goes on to say crafting can help those who suffer from anxiety, depression or chronic pain. It may release neurotransmitters which ease stress. Crafting may even protect our brain from aging. From personal experience I have to agree with this article!

If you would like to learn more on this topic here are two articles which I enjoyed. The first is from Berkeley Wellness. The second is from CNN.

      The Unexpected Benefits of Crafting

This is your brain on crafting

Craft stress free with these 10 steps
      Create stress free

Crafting and creating should be an escape and relaxing. This should be on purpose and the goal. These 10 steps for creating stress free will help ensure the positive benefits we all desire.

Here are 10 steps for creating stress free.

      1. Decide what to create and for what purpose. Explore online for ideas. Certainly, save your favorites. Think about who you are creating for? What are some unique details about the who, what and where. Write it down.

      2. Visualize the how to, and the end design. See the outline and finished product in your mind. If there is an issue, work the kinks out here. Draw or make notes.

      3. Make a list of the needed supplies. It is so stressful to start creating and realize something is missing. This also helps if you impulse buy like me! I can leave a craft store with items for 3 more projects along with a blown budget!

      4. Now get the supplies! This can be a memorable adventure! Go with someone you enjoy while you shop. Grab a treat along the way, ice cream or coffee are my favs! Play some fun music in the car during the trip. Another way to get supplies is to order online. Then when the order arrives, it is like a gift to yourself!

      5.  Plan the time to create. Fit time in between the hustle of life. Give yourself this gift of time to create. Put it on the calendar, tell those around you so they know you will be busy.

      6. Lay the materials out with easy access in the order they will be used. Have the equipment needed, such as a glue gun, sewing machine or Cricut machine ready to use. Confirm tools and equipment are in working order. It’s really frustrating when you start a project and there is a breakdown! A broken needle or dull scissors can steal your joy!

      7. Now it’s time to create!  Have the area well lighted, low light makes it hard to see. Bring in an extra lamp, take lamp shades off or use a portable light. Play your favorite music, movie, or FaceTime with a friend. Have a favorite beverage and snack nearby. Let the creating begin!

      8. While you create, write additional ideas down! The act of creating feeds the imagination. Ideas can pour out and you don’t want to forget these.

      9. Finally, clean as you go. Throw away scraps and waste as they collect. Save the reusable items for a future project. After you are finished working, it is a nice bonus to not have a big mess to clean up.

      10. Stop if exhaustion or sleepiness creeps in, mistakes are likely to happen. Stop or take a break before there is a problem!

      Above all enjoy the process!

      Treasure your creation!

Make your Own Patriotic Floral Wreath

Make Your Own Patriotic Floral Wreath

Make your Own Patriotic Floral Wreath

Celebrate the United States of America with a handmade patriotic, red white and blue floral wreath on the front door! What a great way to show our patriotic colors on Memorial Day or July 4th. In addition, this wreath goes great with the red and white garden flowers that my husband requested I plant this spring.

Honestly wreaths can look and seem complicated to make. With a little inspiration and simple instruction, a beautiful wreath is possible for anyone to make. Here are the step by step instructions along with pictures of how to make your own Patriotic Floral Wreath. The color combinations are endless so let your creativity go!

      Skill level: easy

      Glow in the Dark Collar

      Material list

      • Glue sticks

These mini glue sticks from Hobby Lobby are similar to what I use.

      • One wire cutter

I used one from my tool kit in the garage. This set of floral shears and wire cutter from Hobby Lobby would work well if you don’t have wire cutters in the house.

      • One glue gun.
      • Colored silk flowers in desired color palette

To make the Patiotic Floral Wreath follow these simple steps.

      1. Protect the workspace

Put paper or thick plastic table cloth down on the table to protect from scratches and hot glue.

      2. Gather materials together and make time to create

I put on some of my favorite music and poured some flavored water.

For 10 tips for crafting stress free click here!

      Measure the webbing

      3. Lay base wreath on top of table

Lay the base green wreath down with the hook on the back at the top.

      Reflective Pet Collar buckle

      4. Cut the blue blooms off the stem about 2 inches down from bloom.

I used the leaves on some of the flowers to add a variety of greens on wreath.

      5. Attach blue flowers to the inner ring of wreath

Glue the end of the blue flower stem by squeezing the hot glue on the bottom inch of each stem. Be careful not to burn your fingers!

Stick blue flowers into the green wreath starting at the bottom inside the center of the wreath.

Continue glueing and sticking blue flowers into the wreath all the way around, forming an inside circle of flowers. Place these blooms close together.

Add a few blue flowers on either side of the row of blooms to add width to the row as needed.

iron on the reflective paw print

      6. Cut the red rose blooms of the garland about 2 inches from the flower.

I used some of the leaves on these blooms as well to add variety.

Red white and blue floral wreath

      7. Attach the red roses to the middle ring of the wreath using the same gluing method as with the blue flowers.

I spread these blooms out throughout the greenery of the wreath. Keep the red flowers balanced around the wreath but space them apart. Put some blooms towards the outside edge of the wreath.

Red white and blue floral wreath

      8. Cut the white roses off the stems leaving as much stem as possible.

These blooms are smaller with smaller stems. Again I used some of the leaves to give the variety of greenery.

Use the same glueing process mentioned above to attach these white flowers to the wreath. Since the stem will be shorter there may only be a half inch of glue on the stem.

Place these white roses among the red roses balancing these blooms. I placed some single small white blooms in spaces that looked empty and again glued white roses close to the outside edge of the wreath.

      9. Finish the Patriotic Floral Wreath

Look at the wreath to find any empty spaces, or places which are unbalanced in color. Glue additional blooms into areas with too much green showing or where there is a missing red or white flower. Fill in with a small red or white flower towards the outside edge if it is needed.

Turn the leaves of the wreath and blooms so they face forward. Then glue these down if they continue to turn backward.

Now pull off the little threads of dried hot glue off the wreath. Look closely and clean these threads off the wreath. This step finishes a project resulting in a final professional product.

Front door with Patriotic Floral Wreath

In addition, a ribbon or bow may be added to the wreath for decoration or to hang the wreath. I chose not to add anything to my wreath because I want the flowers to be the focus. The wreath had a hanger on the back so I did not need to add anything to hang it. If the wreath did not have a way to hang it, I would have added a ribbon that coordinated with the flowers. Place the knot behind the wreath so only the ribbon is showing.

Enjoy the beauty of the Patriotic Floral Wreath
