Material list for the Reflective Pet Collar.
(cotton can be used as well)
Reflective Buckle and Adjuster 1.5 inch
This collar can be very sturdy by using an upholstery thread then sewing the seams multiple times and using a heavy plastic buckle with a welded D ring. Also you can make the collar all cotton by purchasing cotton webbing and thread.
To make the Reflective Pet Collar follow these simple steps.
1. Measure pet’s neck circumference.
First measure around your pet’s neck loosely. Then take this number and multiply it by 1.5. This is the length you will need of the webbing and Reflective Paw Print Iron On. For example, my dog’s neck measured 11 inches, multiplied 1.5, gives me the length 16.5 inches
2. Measure webbing and Reflective Paw Print Iron On.
Lay the webbing flat next to the measuring tape and mark your measurement. Next lay the Reflective Paw print Iron On along side the measuring tape and mark your measurement.
3. Cut the webbing and Reflective Iron On.
Use scissors to cut straight across the webbing at the marked measurement. Then do the same with the Reflective Paw Print Iron On.
4. Melt the ends of the webbing.
Take a lighter and gently melt the end of the webbing to prevent the end from fraying or unraveling. Light the lighter or candle then gently wave the end of the webbing through the flame. Be careful not to burn the webbing or your fingers!
5. Attach the Reflective Paw Print Iron On.
Set the Iron to the recommended temperature per your Reflective Paw Print Iron On. Lay the webbing flat on an ironing board. Next line up theReflective Iron On at the beginning of one end of the webbing. Center the Reflective Paw Print Iron On, on the webbing. Place iron on the end of webbing with the Iron On placed on top. Next move the iron towards the long end of webbing while you continue to place the Iron On along the center of webbing. Use gentle pressure while ironing. Check to make sure the Iron On is attaching but do not burn your fingers as the Iron On gets hot.
6. Attach the adjuster part to collar.
Thread the adjuster piece onto the webbing with the grips of the adjuster piece on the Reflective Paw print side.
Rotate collar so that the webbing side is facing up.
Stitch along the edge a half inch in from the raw edge. Use a straight stitch to sew back and forth, 4 or 5 times to secure this in place.
My sewing machine is a work horse and sews right through this collar, but if your machine struggles, spin your wheel by hand to bring the needle down through the material for the first row to put holes into the collar. Or just run your machine at a slow speed, letting the needle work through the material while not bending the needle with too much pressure.
7. Attach the male piece of the buckle.
With the webbing facing up, thread the male end of the buckle through pulling it to the middle of the collar. Then thread the end through the buckle adjuster piece.
The collar should make a circle. Next pull the loose end of the webbing so the male end and the adjuster piece are a few inches apart.
8. Thread the D ring onto collar.
The flat side of the D ring should be on the webbing side, then the curved side of the D ring should be on the Reflective Paw Print side.
9. Attach the female side of the buckle.
Thread the female side of the buckle onto the collar with the female side towards the Reflective Paw Print side.
Loop the free end of the collar around to the far end of the D ring. This should cause the webbing to be together. Next thread the loose end under the D ring (or back inside the D ring) and back towards the female buckle. Look closely at these pictures.
Make sure your collar looks like the one in the pictures above and below. Now pinch together and make sure there is enough room for the sewing machine foot to fit between.
10. Sew the female end down.
Due to the thickness of all the layers, this is the hardest piece to sew. Place the pinched collar under the sewing machine foot. Then use a zigzag stitch if available because it is a stronger stitch, if not use a straight stitch. Stitch back and forth, 4 times. Again if the needle doesn’t pass through the material easily, go slow or move the needle by hand. Take your time and don’t rush this step. This will secure both the D ring and female buckle into place.
11. Trim all the loose threads and buckle your collar!
Move the adjuster piece to make the collar larger or smaller to fit your dog!
Enjoy your Reflective Pet Collar!!
